What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is healthcare that deals with health from a natural perspective. Chiropractic focuses on the human spine and its impact on our nervous system and health. It is a hands on health profession: free from drugs, surgery and other invasive " traditional" medical interventions. The main objective of a Doctor of Chiropractic is to find and correct vertebral subluxations. Your chiropractor may address a variety of musculoskeletal complaints such as your aches and pains, but the main concerns is always finding, removing, and preventing the subluxation. A chiropractor correct subluxations by delivering a controlled and highly specific corrective thrust to the subluxated area. This is known as a chiropractic adjustment. An adjustment can be delivered manually with the hands or sometimes, with the aid of an instrument.

The Subluxation

A Subluxation occurs when a bone of the spine, or other area of the body, loses its normal position. This affects the Nervous System, resulting in abnormal function, decreased health and often pain and symptoms.

SUBLUXATION Þ Nerve Interference Þ Abnormal Function Þ LOSS OF HEALTH

How can a subluxation affect the Nervous System?

Let's discover at some basic anatomy which is necessary for your complete understanding. The human spine consists of 24 separate moveable bones called Vertebrae. There are 7 vertebrae in your neck, which is known as your cervical spine. The next 12 vertebrae compose your mid-back region, or thoracic spine. Finally 5 vertebrae make up your low back, or lumbar spine. Your skull sits at the top of your spine, while your sacrum and pelvis might be considered the base of your spine. Each bone in your spine articulates and interacts with the others above, below, and around it. In addition, muscles and ligaments connect and interwine the bones of your spine, forming on continous chain. Thus, a problem in the spine is not isolated to one joint. It affects areas above and below as well. The bones of your messages down your spinal cord to the muscles, organs, tissues and cells of your body. Your brain also receives information from your body through your spinal cord. Your spinal cord runs through the middle of your spine via large holes in the center of each vertebra. Spinal nerves branch off the spinal cord and exist between vertebrae, via spaces known as intervertebral foramen. These nerves go on to supply the organs, muscles, and tissues of your body. Just remember the basics:

1. Your spine encases and protects your spinal cord.

2. Nerves exist between bones of your spine.

3. Bones of your spine are closely interrelated and connected together.

Now consider one more fact. According to Gray's Anatomy: "The Nervous System is the master system in the body and controls and coordinates all other systems..."

The Big Idea!

1. The Nervous System controls and coordinates all other activity in the body.

2. The spine surrounds and protects the spinal cord.

A problem in the spine can affect your Nervous System and ultimately influence overall health!

Consider this Example:

A vertebra in your mid-back slips out of its normal position: A Subluxation.

This occurs near the location where a nerve supplying the lungs exists the spinal column.

Can you understand how a Subluxation might adversely affect your respiratory system and overall health? Now imagine how complicated things could become if you ALREADY have respiratory problems: such as Asthma or COPD! Isn't it logical to believe a problem in the spine can lead to a variety of conditions, and eventually ill health? That's EXACTLY what a Subluxation does!

Do you understand how a Subluxation in the low back might be associated with constipation or urinary problems?

Can you see how a spinal Subluxation near nerves supplying the stomach might be associated with digestive problems?

It is such a stretch of the imagination to believe a Subluxation in the neck might be associated with headaches?

It's not as simple as "a bone pinching a nerve." In reality, Subluxations cause complex changes within your body that end up causing abnormal function. There are 5 main components to the Vertebral Subluxation Complex:

1. Neuropathology: Abnormal Nerve function.

2. Kinesiopathology: Abnormal Joint motion.

3. Myopathology: Abnormal Muscle function.

4. Histopathology: Tissue abnormalities.

5. Pathophysiology: Pathoanatomical changes. "Damage" due to prolonged Subluxations such as: degeneration, fibrosis, and loss of overall health and homeostasis.

Causes of Subluxation

There are 3 main causes of Subluxation:

1. Physical trauma

2. Chemical stress

3. Emotional stress

The 3T’s

These are often referred to as “The 3T’s”:

  1. Thoughts
  2. Traumas
  3. Toxins

1. Trauma

Major Trauma: A car accident, A fall from a ladder, etc.

Minor Trauma: Awkward sleeping positions, stepping off the curb incorrectly, yardwork, ect., even repetitively performing the same motions at your job on a daily basis can lead to Subluxations.

2. Chemical Stress or “Toxins”

We are literally Bombarded with Chemical stresses each and every day of our lives! Artificial dyes, chemical and Preservatives in our Foods and Beverages.

Caffeine, Nicotine, Prescription Drugs

Chemicals in cleaning and Hygiene products

Smog, Smoke, Car Exhaust, Chemical pollution. The list goes on….

3. Emotional Stress or “Thoughts”

Emotional and Mental stress cause physical changes in the body.

When you are stressed and anxious, your muscles tense and pull on the bones they are attached to.

How do I know I am Subluxated?

It can be hard to tell!

Subluxations can manifest themselves with a variety of symptoms, or no symptoms at all!

You can’t determine if you are subluxated based on symptoms

Only a Doctor of Chiropractic is trained to identify and correct subluxations.

Just think about an average day in your life. NOW ask yourself

Do I ever experience stress?

Do I ever suffer any falls, slips, stumbles, trips, or bumps?

Do I smoke, consume ANY artificial chemicals in my food or drink, or breathe ANY polluted air?

Obviously  we can never eliminate all of the causes of subluxation. Instead, we must strived minimize the causes by living as healthy and stress free as we are capable of living! So What?

Obviously you probably aren’t going to drop dead from a Subluxation any time soon.

So what is all of the fuss about?

One Subluxation is a small thing and isn’t a “Big Deal” at first. Each one is part of  a degenerative process and left untreated will cause ill health.

What can you do?

Get Adjusted!

You should have checked for Subluxations and adjusted on a regular basis. Even if you “feel fine.”

Remember, Subluxations are often present with no symptoms.

Have you ever been to the dentist and discovered you had a cavity, even though you felt no pain?

What would happen if that dental cavity were to go unrecognized and untreated for months or years?

Undetected and untreated Subluxations can silently have an ill effect on your health in much the same way. Symptoms may not appear for months or years.

While symptoms may not be occurring, joint fixation and the resulting degeneration ARE!

Remember…ONLY a Doctor of Chiropractic is trained to detect and correct Subluxations. Each and every Subluxation negatively impacts the health of you and your loved ones! Protect the health and Wellness of Your Family.
